They’re Talking About a DRAFT Again, Folks

Are you pissed off enough YET???????

WASHINGTON (AP) — Frequent tours for U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan have stressed the all-volunteer force and made it worth considering a return to a military draft, President Bush’s new war adviser said Friday.

“I think it makes sense to certainly consider it,” Army Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute said in an interview with National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.”

“And I can tell you, this has always been an option on the table. But ultimately, this is a policy matter between meeting the demands for the nation’s security by one means or another,” said Lute, who is sometimes referred to as the “Iraq war czar.” It was his first interview since he was confirmed by the Senate in June.

President Nixon abolished the draft in 1973. Restoring it, Lute said, would be a “major policy shift” and Bush has made it clear that he doesn’t think it’s necessary.

“The president’s position is that the all-volunteer military meets the needs of the country and there is no discussion of a draft. Gen. Lute made that point as well,” National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.

In the interview, Lute also said that “Today, the current means of the all-volunteer force is serving us exceptionally well.”

Still, he said the repeated deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan affect not only the troops but their families, who can influence whether a service member decides to stay in the military.

“There’s both a personal dimension of this, where this kind of stress plays out across dinner tables and in living room conversations within these families,” he said. “And ultimately, the health of the all-volunteer force is going to rest on those sorts of personal family decisions.”

The military conducted a draft during the Civil War and both world wars and between 1948 and 1973. The Selective Service System, re-established in 1980, maintains a registry of 18-year-old men.

Rep. Charles Rangel, D-New York, has called for reinstating the draft as a way to end the Iraq war.

Bush picked Lute in mid-May as a deputy national security adviser with responsibility for ensuring efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan are coordinated with policymakers in Washington. Lute, an active-duty general, was chosen after several retired generals turned down the job.Don’t even post your comments that it won’t ever happen – look around at the number of things you would have said that about 5 years ago. This bill includes men AND women, ages 18 – 42 – with NO deferments.

  1. Charlie “bring back the draft now” Rangle has been pleading for a draft for years. Before the 2004 elections, he even submitted a bill to bring it back. Funny thing is though, when the republican congress forced a vote on the measure, not even good ol’ Charlie would vote for it.

It’s just other attempt at playing politics with the war. Seems odd that nobody in the administration is open to bringing back the draft, but the dems are trying the hardest to bring it back.

Blablabla……dito and i hope so….then maybe people will pay attention…..maybe those little cutsie ribbons “support the troops” will actually mean something other than “tacky”……and maybe people will start realizing that wars are fought for money and power and NOT for liberty….t

Perhaps this will finally awaken people to act!! Impeach the crooks and liars!!

How We Can Take the Constitution Back From the Brink

  12. Here’s the formula:

PROBLEM, REACTION, SOLUTION – all brought to you by the same people.

With one fell swoop – another 9/11-style situation, aka “National Catastrophe” – we have the package tied up with a neat little bow.

The Decider/Commander Guy puts into play his Executive Orders of late, the Patriot Act goes into high gear – and the public DEMANDS a draft to increase the size of the military so we can go after “the bad guys.”

    Done deal.

  13. blacktygrrrr

There will not be a draft. It is a non-issue, non-story, and non-starter.

  14. toni

BTG…..maybe and maybe not…..seems to me i remember invading iraq without due cause…..with the news media just going along…..wake up …you will do whatever this bunch of thugs decides is your future…..HELLO!!!! ….invade iran ….hmmm with what….IF they decide to do so , you will have no choice ..
You act as though this is a democracy……wake up and get involved…..AND TURN OFF fox news……..
the last 7 years should have thought you THAT………..t

  15. Correct, this is not a democracy, it is a represtative republic. A least that what the constitution says. It is not nor has it ever been a democracy. It also isn’t a socialist republic, but several people are trying to turn it into one. Think “shared responsibility and shared prosperity”.

Remember, it is the democrats that are calling for a draft. Check out the draft bill. Who wrote it and who sponsors it? Democrats! If you want to have a draft, just keep voting for democrats.

  16. Lute is a loon if he really thinks the draft is an option!

Would you be willing to spread the word about It’s a site dedicated to shattering the myths surrounding the selective slavery system and building mass civil disobedience to stop the draft before it starts!

Our banner on a website, printing and posting the anti-draft flyer or just telling friends would help.

smt, wrong, its SUPPOSED to be a representative republic, “saywhen” is right, argue the issue not the political “party line” ….you guys are a hoot …the “with us” or “against us dead brain mentality”….FYI i am not a democrat and i used to be a republican until this crap, now i am independent and yes i know good old charlie has done this before…..but you are arguing the wrong points….and frankly i almost wish a draft would come back so PUNKS like you would learn to turn off “fox so called news” and learn what “reality” really is…..
plus come to these forums more informed, and a “patriot” does not have a political party, a patriot holds all OUR representatives to account, thats what the constitution requires us to do, and i don’t care what letter is after their names……….t

  18. toni

Saywhen, RE: Here’s the formula; YEP and it’s enough to make you want to cry……….t

  19. For those of you out there who have watched what has happened in Congress since the ’06 elections and still believe that there is a difference between the Republicans and the Democrats, I have only one thing to say – YOU AREN’T PAYING ATTENTION!

Republicrats, Democans, Repugnicans, Democraps – same, same, same!!!

  20. illa morales
